Powerpoint presentation

For those of you who critiqued my presentation, thanks. I like getting anything that might help to make it better. :)

I'm glad you liked my show. I was trying to make it really colorful so it would stand out. Part of the reason why it was so colorful and intriguing looking was because my audience was meant more to be elementary and middle school aged kids. When I was making the presentation I noticed that some of the slides would be more difficult to read than others, but i thought the graphics made it a lot more interesting than looking at a bunch of words. "A picture is worth a thousand words." All young kids have A.D.D. and need something really exciting to look at, especially if they have to sit through a presentation. I tried being enthusiastic to keep the audience interested and it seemed to work from what I got back from the feed back. I'm sorry about the talking really fast part. I was trying to make in the 5 minutes that we were allotted. If I were actually going to present this to kids, I would have added more slides and info in it. I would have also talked slower. But for the sake of not taking up a whole class period, I tried adding in as much detail in as few words as possible. I also made it more so that the audience would see the main points on the powerpoint presentation and I would go into more detail on them while talking. As for saying "basically" a million, I always seem to pick a "comfort word" whenever I'm doing a presentation. I try not to, but I always manage to do it. I try not to make it "like" since that can get rather obnoxious rather quickly. I also tried not to make it "umm" either because that makes it seem like I have no idea what I'm talking about. I did realize I was saying "basically" a lot after a while, but I couldn't keep myself from saying it.

Thanksgiving break

Thanksgiving break was pretty good. It wasn't too much of a break though since I worked 35 hours that week. I work at a vet office back at home as an uncertified vet tech. Basically, I do all the same stuff that the vet techs do, I just don't have a fancy piece of framed paper stating that I can actually do all the stuff. Other than that I worked on a project for the local animal shelter (which reminds me I need to e-mail one of the ladies that works there).

The project that I did was similar to an Angel Tree. The difference was I used cats and dogs instead of needy kids. To start off the project, I traced a circle onto colored construction paper and cut them out so that they represented the ball Christmas tree ornaments. For the project, I went to the shelter and got pictures of 17 different cats and dogs that were available for adoption. With those pictures I also got a description of the animal: age, breed, sex, and temperament. Then I had to put all that info together. I put all the pictures together and e-mailed them to the shelter so they could use the pictures if they wanted to. I went through all the pictures I took and chose the best one of each animal. I then had to resize the picture to about 2 inches by 2.5 inches. With the resized pictures, I typed up the descriptions of the animals and had to make sure they would fit in a space of about 2 inches by 2.5 inches. I then e-mailed all this info to the shelter to make sure it was ok with them and that all the info was correct. After that I had to print and cut out each of the pictures and descriptions of the animals. With the cut outs, I pasted the picture of each animal onto one side of the cut out ball ornaments and glued the description of the animal onto the other side. After that, I used clear packing tape to cover the ornaments so that they would not get torn or so that if they got wet for whatever reason the ink wouldn't smudge and smear. With all of these ornaments I made a poster board that explained what I was trying to do. I also put information about the shelter and what they do. There was info on adopting, donations, volunteering, and a general overall info of the shelter (such as location and hours). This probably doesn't sound like too much work...but when you do it 6 times, it really is. I made 6 different copies of all of this to be in 6 different places throughout town. Doing this project is pretty much what I spent all of my free-time over break doing...the time when I wasn't working at the vet office. I did end up adopting one of the dogs though. He's cool. He's an Australian cattle dog mix that's about 5 months old. He's so cute. The problem with working at a vet office that sees animals from the shelter and then going to help the shelter can be a good and bad thing...especially when you like animals...you end up bringing a lot of them home. (I have 5 dogs, 4 cats, 3 chickens, 2 horses, and a few fish.)

That's my new puppy. :) Isn't he cute? The shelter had his name Danny, but I didn't like it too much so I changed it to Saturn.

I was able to get away from work and the shelter project and hang out with some friends from back at home 2 times. It was nice and a lot of fun seeing them again. I haven't seen them since July and I've known them since elementary school.

Thanksgiving diner was great. My mom cooked, and let me tell you what, she is an excellent cook! :) I definitely was beginning to miss home cooked food. The dining hall food is good, but it's only so good and my cooking isn't the best. I slept half of Thanksgiving day though since I was so tired from working and everything. I was luckily not one of the people that had to go into the vets office to check up on the animals and take care of them. Oh, speaking of animals at the vets. we had a dog come in that had swallowed a bouncy ball and gotten it stuck in its intestines. We also had some complete idiot (to put it nicely) come in with a litter of puppies. The litter originally had 15 puppies in it. 7 of them had died in the week before the owner brought them into the office. The owner brought in the 6 puppies that he had left (some of them died soon after birth or in the few short weeks that can't really be called a life). He brought them in by putting them in the back of his pick up truck, not in a crate or tied or anything, just flying around in the bed of the truck. We ended up keeping one of the puppies and warming it up and giving it fluids subcutaneously (under the skin is what that translates into). The puppy was so cold from sitting in the back of the pick and living outside in the 30 and 40 degree weather that when we first took its temperature we couldn't get the thermometer off the "L". When we finally did get its temperature to read it was at 89 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature of a dog is supposed to be around 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit to give you a reference point. The owner took the rest of the 5 puppies back home int eh bed of his pick up truck. When he arrived home he called us to tell us that he lost one of the puppies. He didn't mean that it had died. He quite literally lost the dog. He only counted 4 puppies when he got home....the 5th puppy went flying out of his pick up truck somewhere along the way home. We called animal control on him. Welcome to Idiotsville, population: 1.

That pretty much sums up my break. I didn't do anything that was related to school. I thought "hey, this is a break from school, I'm not bringing anything home that has to do with school and I'm not going to work on any assignments that might be due soon (such as the portfolio) while I'm on break". And that is why I'm working on writing a lot of blogs now. :)

Mr. Bean-part 2

ok, so mr. bean's real name clyde apparently, i saw a "lost dog" poster for him halloween so i called up the number that night and gave them their dog back, he belonged to a 5 year old girl, she was so excited to see clyde and get him back, she came running over in her fairy princess balarina costume "CLYDE!" it was pretty cute, not gonna lie, he was a really good dog though, was kinda sad to see him go but i knew the family needed their doggie back

taht weekend kinda sucked in general though, i laid my bird to rest cuz one of my cats had gotten a hold of her and she died 2 days later :( i didn't do anything fun that entire weekend and i got a in an argument with my boyfriend (and he's still a little mad at me and i don't understand why), yea...so that's the other weekend...last weekend was good though :)

anyways, i'm planning on doing an informative type genre for my...i'm not sure what this is called...assignment 3...that's what i'll go with, anyways i was planning on doing a presentation at a school (via powerpoint) and handing out flyers to the students to give to their parents, in the presentation and the flyer it will have info about 4-H and how to join

a lot of the times it's going to be research results for informative essays or presentations, it's used to convey info to the audience to let them know about the topic, it could also just be an educational thing, like a seminar on how to properly flush a toilet i dunno...it could be on anything is my point, anywho, so long as the info is correct and has data to back it up you can pretty much take it how you want

way to reach out

my community is 4-H, since it's a youth organization i think i would go to schools and do a presentation there, make a powerpoint and some flyers to send home with the kids so that way they can show their parents so the parents know about it, i'll make a cool presentation..with pictures and words! yay! exciting! :P

essay review thingy

about the part with the broader theme, i definitely forgot about connecting it to the rest of the world (obviously), i could probly include some examples of how they impact the world and have branches overseas, i could also include how the kids develop into better people which helps them in their future lives as leaders in their career and getting along with other and working as a team

for having 4-H mention not immediatley i thought it was a little bit confusing, but i thought might be a good technique to draw the reader in cuz they wanted to figure out what i was talking about

and i have no idea what to do for a title....i didn't know what to do for it, and then i forgot about it

Mr. Bean

Mr. Bean is small. He doesn't really say much either, the quite type if you will. He doesn't like being left alone at all, he'll follow you around where ever you go and observe quietly. But then again, Mr. Bean is a dog. My roomie was at her barn one day and saw a small dog and mistook him for one of the many barn cats. When she got closer to him she realized that it wasn't a cat at all, but rather a little old chihuahua. She went around asking the other people and the neighbors if the dog belonged to them. Nobody claimed him. So she brought him home because it was supposed to get down to freezing that night. My boyfriend and I ended up keeping him. He's a god little dog that someone had just abandoned at the barn. You could tell because it was obvious that he'd been wearing a collar by the way his coat on his neck was messed up in a circle all the way around. We've had him for about a week now. He likes to sleep a lot. At night when it's cold he'll hop onto the bed (which is actually a futon) and crawl under the blankets and lay right next to you. He's sleeping by me now actually. He doesn't bark a lot or run around all hyperly. And he gets along with the other dogs and cats which is good. We checked to see if someone had lost a little dog, but no one had. So that's the story of Mr. Bean. Why we chose that name, I'm not really sure, but it seems to fit him well. :)

for starters...sorry about not being grammatically correct

the 4-H collegiate group here at VT meets twice a month. A lot of what they do is help out local 4-H groups in the surrounding community of Montgomery County. They help with organization and set up for certain events as well running the events. During the summer, all the 4-H groups in the state of Virginia are able to participate in Congress, which is held here at VT. It is an organization the promotes leadership and working as a community. During the interview, I asked if they knew who the founder of the VT collegiate 4-H group was, but they weren't sure. there are positions of hierarchy within the organization itself that are voted on (president, VP, etc.).

goals

1) for the research project we have to do, since we have to try and find something that the community needs help with, i would like to try and actually help them with their problem, see if we can't get something accomplished

2) to write on my blog more than once a week and not just for homework assignments

3) to share advice and input with the underclassmen in class and try to help them get through their first year

Everyone always goes to the dining hall. I mean, why not? The food is great! You can definitely come across a wide variety of people with different backgrounds. It could be considered a mixing bowl. Many different groups of people came to the US in search of a better life. And now, many generations later, those same groups of people are still coming together. Except instead of being in search of a better life, they're coming together because of food. I think food is a good enough reason to come together. The food itself has a such a variety. There's pizza and salads and tacos and burgers and pasta....so many nations are being represented just by a few dishes of food, let alone the people coming to eat them. Food solves all problems: when you're in a bad mood or hungry, eat some and it makes you feel better; if people agree on a food they like, then that's something they have in common; if it's a food they don't like, well then it still works out because there's more of that food available for the person who likes that food. Food is just the universal problem taker-awayer. :)

Questions to ask:
Why did they choose that particular food item?
Have they had this dish before or are they trying something new?
Did they come with friends or a group that they are part of?
If it's a group they are part, do the people the people they went to diner with hang out outside of this group?
Do they like the food they chose?
Is the food they chose appealing to the eye?
Why did they choose this dining facility?

Narrative:
Several groups, as well as loners looking for a quick and studial bite to eat, enter into the dining hall filled with people and food. There is one thing you notice that all these people have in common: they are all happy to be here. They enter in and wander around, pondering what they will eat; it all looks so delicious. They may run into a familiar face that they know and stop and say hi and ask how they've been. They want to know how their summer was, if they took any trips or worked, and how their classes are going and how they like them. After making the final selection for food and drink, they look helplessly trying to find a place to sit and eat their food in the overflowing dining hall. Once they've finished their first round of food, several of them head up for seconds, others just work their way towards the dessert and see what wonderful delights are available. Their eyes widen with glee as they find the perfect selection to top off a stuffing meal. Finally full to their stomach's content, they meander their way over to the dish line to deposit their dirty dishware and garbage before heading out the door. They say hi to person they recognize in the next group of attendees to the dining hall.

assignment 2

hey guys, between katie and i, we bought a copy of the book from the kopy korner to share since we're roomies....and now we've managed to lose it, is there anyway one of you all would be nice enough to write what the writing assignment was so we can at least do that part of it and we'll get a new copy of it and do the reading later, we'd appreciate it :) thanks
